After a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the neurons and networks that are directly damaged often do not regenerate. That’s true — most neurons in the central nervous system don’t repair themselves the way skin or liver cells do. However, the brain is plastic — meaning it has a remarkable ability to reorganize and adapt. This is called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity means: Nearby (adjacent) brain regions, or even regions on the opposite side of the brain, can sometimes learn to take over the functions of the damaged areas, by forming new neural pathways. This is not always perfect or complete, but it explains why rehabilitation, education, and practice can lead to improvement after TBI — even if the injured tissue itself doesn’t fully recover. So the key idea is: 👉 The damaged neurons don’t really recover. 👉 Other parts of the brain can learn and adapt to take over. 👉 And repeated practice, therapy, and learning help those new pathways develop. 01:05:42 Adeline Arjad: That’s why people can, for example, go back to school, regain speech, improve memory, or re-learn skills — thanks to neuroplasticity, not because the injured tissue itself healed. 01:07:48 CHRISTIAN J: The Immortal Mind Michael Egnor & Denise o Leary 01:09:18 Matt Winter: Thank you, Christian, for mentioning this book. 01:09:27 Pilar: That book looks cool 01:09:41 CHRISTIAN J: Simply incredible! 01:09:44 Pilar: Cindy you are a warrior 01:09:46 cassidy c: I like the acronym kiss-keep it simple stupid 01:10:29 Adeline Arjad: I like: Keep It Simple Sweetheart KISS 01:10:37 CHRISTIAN J: Reacted to I like: Keep It Sim... with "👍" 01:10:40 cassidy c: You are a present, a gift to everyone 01:11:07 cassidy c: Reacted to "I like: Keep It Sim…" with 👍 01:11:57 Cindy hernandez03/5/18: Reacted to "You are a present, a..." with ❤️ 01:12:20 CHRISTIAN J: It's completely a new life!
